What is a biosecurity officer?

In pursuance of Executive Order no. 475 of 25 May 2016 and Executive Order no. 981 of 15 October 2009 with subsequent amendments companies are responsible for ensuring that one or more of the employees are appointed as biosecurity officer(s). The person appointed is to attend a training course offered by the Centre for Biosecurity and Biopreparedness (CBB). The course is provided free of charge. Biosecurity officers are also to be approved by CBB. For that purpose the biosecurity officer must consent to information being obtained on any criminal record he or she may have.

After approval, the biosecurity officer is to ensure that the company fulfills its obligations regarding registration of stocks and training of persons who have access to controlled materials. The biosecurity officer is obliged to keep him- or herself updated on biosecurity matters, for instance by visiting the website of CBB, reading news letters etc.The biosecurity officer is the company's contact point regarding all biosecurity matters and the biosecurity officer accompanies the management and CBB during visits of inspection. A biosecurity officer must be employed by the company, have a relevant educational background, and be able to ensure that the required procedures, training program etc. are implemented. 

CBB can completely, or partially, suspend the company's licence and the approval of the biosecurity officer if the requirements in the Executive Order are not met.
